![]() "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is stunning on most levels, and with such a dark nature, Disney ushers in a new level of animated entertainment. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (French: Notre-Dame de Paris) is a French Gothic novel by Victor Hugo published in January 14, 1831. Although the songs match the style of the film, there's nothing quite memorable enough to latch on to and the comedy is mainly lost on the three gargoyles, there's a sincerity and emotional tension built throughout the film that causes a deeper connection to the material compared to most animated films. ![]() In "The Hunchback", the serious nature of the film often has you at extremes. This is a whole new level of animosity and, yes, we've faced this before with Disney, as Jafar captures the Princess, but you're never under the impression that lives are at stake. The villain, Frollo, whose animated details are beyond anything I've quite seen before, wants the gypsies dead, but cannot deny the beauty of Esmeralda and wants her all to himself, so much so that he'll kill her if she doesn't comply. Many of the characters face developments of an adult nature. This film is often a struggle to endure at times, as you witness the brutal mistreatment of Quasimodo and the quarrel between the handsome and gentle Phoebus and Quasimodo, both vying for the hand of Esmeralda. With enough animated detail, action sequences, and character development, the film catapults light years beyond anything before its time. ![]() "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is one of the darkest Disney movies to date. ![]() ![]() ![]() A treat for readers of all ages, 'Harlem Shuffle' is a joyful ride that features a heist at the ‘Hotel Theresa', the Waldorf of Harlem and Ray maintaining his image as a decent furniture salesman. In 1960s Harlem, Ray Carney owns his own furniture store and is determined to prove himself as an honest businessman, in stark contrast to his crooked dead. While Whitehead abstains from didactic jargon or narration at all times, he clearly marks the ‘illusion of advancement’ that people fall prey to. It also simultaneously explores the question of morals, ethics and how far can they be pragmatically employed by a common man who is struggling on a daily basis. Primarily depending on the protagonist’s double life and how he manages both, the novel also has hilarious takes on street fights and slightly mocks hard core action thrillers. To be factionless is to live a menial, impoverished existence with no sense of belonging, and this is regarded as a fate worse than death. This is not a choice to be made lightly, as the faction to which a person belongs is seen to be a critical part of who they are and is deemed more important than family. This will be followed by a choosing ceremony, in which she will make the ultimate choice: to stay with her family in Abnegation or transfer to a new faction in which she will spend the rest of her life.
